Add your light to mine, baby Add your light to mine Add your light to mine, baby Together we could shine I’ve seen you dancing like no one was looking Beneath the fullest moon Oh some day soon I’m gonna find all the things I’ve been yearning for Are you coming too? Add your light to mine, baby Add your light to mine Add your light to mine, baby Together we could shine All the rubbish that ever surrounds us Could make a stone wall cry But someday I’m Going to leap out of this hole and you can too If you’re by my side Add your light to mine, baby Add your light to mine Add your light to mine, baby Together we could shine Baby you’re so fine Together we could shine Add your light to mine

Don’t go thinking you’re cool, don’t you, don’t you Don’t go thinking we’re through, don’t you, don’t you You need a flame before you fizzle out So it don’t matter much anyhow, anymore ‘Cause sugar One kiss don’t make a summer One kiss don’t make a summer But if that’s true Then tell me what I’m s’posed to do When the leaves are falling And I lose the pride that stops the aching inside showing through? But I know if I can just last the winter Spring will bring hope renewed Don’t go thinking you’re funny, don’t you, don’t you My friends were right on the money ‘bout trusting you But I’m not bothered though, not today You’re just a P.S. on a postcard home, anyway ‘Cause sugar One kiss don’t make a summer One kiss don’t make a summer But if that’s true Then tell me what I’m s’posed to do When the leaves are falling And I lose the pride that stops the aching inside showing through? But I know if I can just last the winter Spring will bring hope but… Round here, the only thing that ain’t blue is the sky Round here, are places where the sunlight never shines And I’m tired of keeping composure, ‘cause I’m not supposed to feel sad When everybody’s telling me that: One kiss don’t make a summer One kiss don’t make a summer One kiss don’t make a summer One kiss don’t make a summer But if that’s true Then tell me what I’m s’posed to do When the leaves are falling And I lose the pride that stops the aching inside showing through? Darling, if that’s true Then tell me what I’m s’posed to do When the leaves are falling And I lose the pride that stops the aching inside showing through? Tell me what I’m s’posed to do What am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to do?

Struck Dumb 02:50
Shady, shameless and hurtful The bitterest cream makes the best cocktail curdle and Undream, all that you long for To throw it all down and retreat into a corner and cry “I want you so bad that it hurts I want you so bad that it burns right through” Forever struck dumb, dum dum de do woah a woah Struck dumb, dum dum de do woah Baby, I’ll not desert you When Carrión crows argue envy is a virtue They bleed green. Don’t let your guard down The magic don’t touch when you curl into a small ball and cry “I want you so bad that it hurts I want you so bad that it burns right through” Forever struck dumb, dum dum de doo woah a woah Struck dumb, dum dum de doo woah a woah Lately, silent survival Has brilliant thoughts turning grey on arrival Like old gum: stretched out and worthless A literate thirst is a hearse when you can’t say the lines “I want you so bad that it hurts I want you so bad that it burns right through” Forever struck dumb, dum dum de doo woah a woah Struck dumb, dum dum de doo woah a woah

Shake, shake, shimmy You know that you soothe the ache and the troubles within me Pretending that everything’s cool When I’m twenty seven shades of blue And my lips are unhappy without you My lips are unhappy without you Honey Suckle, you’re missing But I make the morning dew glisten By just hoping and wishing Pretending that I’ve got a clue When I’m twenty seven shades of blue And my lips are unhappy without you My lips are unhappy without you Shake, Shimmy Shake, Shake, Shimmy, Shimmy Shake, Shake, Shimmy without you My lips are unhappy without you
5.
Light the paper, wait for the all clear Like a fuse I burn for you dear Like a flower that yearns for moisture My roots are tangled, I ain’t got no choice dear My Darling I’ll do anything you want Oh I’ll do anything it takes To make you fall Surrender, surrender Dead in the city, walking through traffic A burned out head on a broken matchstick Love’s a trial, work’s a burden Life’s a drag and I don’t deserve it My Darling I’ll do anything you want Oh I’ll do anything it takes To make you fall Surrender, surrender You’ve got to remember I’ve got a heart condition Just listen closer Every fourth beat is missing If it ain’t missing then it’s skip, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip, skipping It’s good for nothing is it good enough for you? Oh I’ll do anything you want I’ll do anything it takes
6.
Well if you’re paying all your dues off Well come on baby, take your shoes off We’re going barefoot on the dance floor We’re gonna show them what you’re made of And shake it back Well now that I got your attention Got your body purring like an engine Got your feet begging for redemption If you got any reservations Take ‘em back Well I know you got rhythm and I know you got soul But there ain’t nothing here for us baby Gotta get outta town We gotta get outta town We gotta get outta town We gotta get outta If you’re feeling kinda locked down When you should be feeling knocked out I got the medicine you’re needing I’m gonna stop your heart bleeding And shake it back 9,8,7,6,5,4,3 Everything is backwards here you know we’ve gotta leave Gotta get outta town We gotta get outta town We gotta get outta town We gotta get outta. town I kiss you once, alright I kiss you twice, well that’s fine I’ll kiss you three times, one more time I’ll kiss you four times baby, you’re mine, you’re mine If you’re chasing down a lost cause You gotta run at it at full force You can’t be pulling any punches Ah, you gotta live for something And shake it back Well I know you got rhythm and I know you got soul But there ain’t nothing here for us baby Gotta get outta town We gotta get outta town
7.
If I could be alone with you, instead of standing on my own I would sound the call and when they all come running then you’ll see I’m not alone at all Oh we live in silence, in shelter, in shadows The ones that you trod on, the ones you were brutal to, but Look for us, we were the casualties forever paying the price for a life less boring Look for us, we were the whipping children, but no more Look for us ‘cause when the tables turn You’ll be saying a prayer to The Great Unwanted Singing a hymn to The Great Unwanted We will not be ignored We won’t take that no more Well you can dodge the pressure, avoid the questions and whisper lies beneath your breath To you, love got smothered under hearts and flowers and it died a sweet and sickly death Our resolve wont break, the stakes are to high to lose You’re finished, you’re over, you’re yesterday’s news. So Look for us, we were the casualties forever paying the price for a life less boring Look for us, we were the whipping children, but no more Look for us ‘cause when the tables turn You’ll be saying a prayer to The Great Unwanted Singing a hymn to The Great Unwanted We will not be ignored We won’t take that no more No more, no more.No more, no more Well, you can roll your eyes and feign surprise, but this ain’t another spurned lover talking Every day you waste away is a little bit closer ‘till the dead start walking Curse yourself into an early grave Well, it’s your body you can die if you want to Die if you want to, die if you want to, die if you want to Enough now, lets go! Look for us, we were the casualties, forever paying the price for a life less boring Look for us, we spent the weekend quaking, dreading the sight of a Monday morning Look for us ‘cause when the tables turn You’ll be saying a prayer to The Great Unwanted
8.
Baby, I’m broke I don’t just mean money My batteries are dead and my engine’s stopped running Baby, I’m tired Past understanding How heartache and debt are my closest companions Baby, I’m broke Nothing to lose I want you to help me but baby, you’re cruel And talking to you I might as well throw my head back and howl at the moon Yeah, for all the good it’ll do Baby, I’m broke I feel so lonesome Love, money or time, I don’t mind, could I loan some? Baby you’re strange Your heart’s all a flutter Your head’s in the sky but your mind’s in the gutter Baby, I’m broke The last train’s left town And I left my way in the lost and the found I’m thinking out loud I might as well throw my head back and shout at the clouds Yeah, for all the good it’ll do now For all the good it’ll do now For all the good it’ll do now Baby, I’m broke There’s no use in crying I’ll stay sitting here, filling time ‘till I’m dying Baby, it’s hard Nothing I can do I’m just some poor fool who life dealt a bad hand to Baby I’m broke And one thing holds true There’s no gold for me, I was born to be blue For all of my money And all of my hopes Have gone up in smoke ‘Cause baby I’m broke
9.
When I’m with you and with you, looking like you do It snaps my brittle heart in two, to think I ever could lose you And Honey, Honey When you’re not here, I get this ringing in my ears To think you’d ever disappear, well that just cripples me my dear And Honey, Honey Through darkest night until the dawn You are the light to which I’m drawn Don’t give me a break I’ve had all the breaks a heart can bear No, no, no, don’t set me free Just don’t, just don’t I need you more than a life raft needs the shore The waves come lapping at my door; a sadness never felt before And Honey, Honey Your red night sky that says, “Tomorrow will be fine” Well, I could never read the signs. I only read between the lines Honey, Honey A million stars that hang in space They ain’t got nothing on your face Don’t give me a break I’ve had all the breaks a heart can bear No, no, no, don’t set me free Just don’t, just don’t There’s no one I could love instead You got me hanging by a thread You’re all I adore And Baby, anyone with half a brain could see So, don’t set me free Just don’t, just don’t Go setting me free Just don’t, just don’t Don’t set me free Baby, ‘cause liberty is wasted on me So don’t, please
10.
I ain’t never been cool I ain’t never been cool Won’t get in your gang, (ain’t getting in, I’m) Won’t fit in your clique (not unique.) Won’t tap you on the shoulder Or kiss you on the cheek I heard you do want to, do what you want to Oh, but you don’t though do you? I ain’t never been cool I ain’t never been cool Won’t get in your club, (ain’t getting in, I’m) Not quite up your street (not your scene.) It’s terribly exciting… I’m practically asleep I heard you say what you want, say what you want to Oh, but you don’t though do you? Oh, but you don’t though do you? Oh, but you don’t though do you? I ain’t never been cool Won’t get in your gang, (ain’t getting in, I’m) Won’t fit in your clique (not unique.) Won’t tap you on the shoulder Or kiss you on the cheek Ooh I heard you Do what you want, do what you want to Say what you want, to who you want to Be what you want, be what you want to Love what you want, love who you want to Do what you want, do what you want to Say what you want, to who you want to Be who you want, be what you want to Do what you want, do what you want, do what… I ain’t never been cool
11.
Well all the luck in the world won’t save me, baby ‘Cause I was hungry but now I’m starving, darling Believe me, believe me The towing inferno inside me May one day consume and devour me Well I say “ Let it burn! Let it burn!” Ain’t never gonna satisfy me Well I tried but I can’t behave like others, lover For the hunger forever keeps me apart, sweetheart Believe me, Believe me The towing inferno inside me May one day consume and devour me Well I say “ Let it burn! let it burn!” Ain’t never gonna satisfy me If there’s fire in your eyes it’s a half step from smiling to scowling I’ve been hurtin’ so bad I can’t tell if I’m burning or drowning So don’t let me burn myself to the ground I’ve been begging so long that it’s starting to sound like a come on A come on, a come on The towing inferno inside me May one day consume and devour me Well I say “ Let it burn! let it burn!” Ain’t no one ever gonna save me Ain’t no one ever gonna save me?
12.
It’s Yours 04:23
I’ve been standing out here in the cold so long That I’m just about freezing now I’m just about freezing now The one sucker punch, it went and caught me wrong And I’m just about breathing now I’m only just breathing now It all comes back to me I know it all comes back to me But it’s yours Anything that you ain’t never got given before Take it all, If you’re with me I’ve no need for anything more And I would be on fire If it’s me that makes you shine Just try it one more time Let me glimmer in your eyes I’ve been trying not to tread on anybody’s toes But I’m just so clumsy now I can’t stop falling down I’ve got a little secret no one’s s’posed to know But I can’t help blurting out You’re all I’ve got to think about It all comes back to me I know it all comes back to me But it’s yours Anything that you ain’t never got given before Take it all, If you’re with me I’ve no need for anything more And I would be on fire If it’s me that makes you shine Just try it one more time Let me glimmer in your eyes But it’s yours Anything that you ain’t never got given before It’s yours
13.
Born on a tear That seeps from the dagger shaped hole in your heart Wounds that run deep Well I’ll try to patch them as best as I can If the sun melts the black of the street And the long road home sticks to your feet When the music that frees you has all but been used up Then I’ll sing the last song for you I hate to see your heart breaking I’ll hold it safe in my hands I don’t know if my words can bind it together But that’s all I know how to do So I’ll sing the last song for you I ain’t got much That I can give you, to keep you afloat Mumbled comforts Are no use for wrestling demons, I know But a lopsided smile and a lovesick recital Might loosen the burden for now The penultimate beat of the drum As the second to last chord is strummed When all other words have already been heard I’ll sing the last song for you I’ll sing the last song for you

LUCKY SOUL are the most exciting thing to come out of Greenwich since time itself. The Great Unwanted is their long-awaited debut album.

The six-piece have released two singles previously: 'My Brittle Heart’ and 'Lips are Unhappy', out in March and June 2006, seemed incapable of inspiring anything but huge heartfelt superlative outpourings, whether in the press ("melodies as colossal, memorable and irresistible as a stampede of elephants bearing down on your tent" – The Guardian), on the radio ("we've never received so many emails - back off!" – Nemone, BBC 6 Music), on the blogs ("I personally am going to carry it around with me everywhere I go, and every now and then sneak a peek to check it wasn’t all some kind of fantastical dream") or from your cabbie ("I like this - it's proper music"). Phil Spector, Dusty Springfield, THE CONCRETES, Stax, THE RONETTES, Brian Wilson, Sticky Fingers: these are some of the reference points being thrown around.

Any one of the songs on The Great Unwanted feels like in another, fairer world it could be a number one single. ‘Add Your Light to Mine, Baby’ opens it all with a two and a half minute funstorm of 60s pop: simple hooks, shimmering harmonies and cock-a-hoop party horns. ‘Lips are Unhappy’ is a thing of vintage goodness with a perfect stop-start melody that will have even the most chuggy of Wurlitzers whooping back to life. ‘Ain’t Never Been Cool’, lead track from the EP out Jan 2007, is all raucous handclaps, wondrous horn arrangements and rock & roll guitars. It soars from gorgeous hook to knock out left-hook til it all reaches a big crashing epiphany of unbridled harmony-soaked joy. (Trivia: the handclaps are from actual LUCKY SOUL fans found via their online messageboard).

But beneath all this is an odd lyrical melancholy: “I’ve seen you dancing like no one was looking / Beneath the fullest moon,” sings Ali amid the exuberance of ‘Add Your Light to Mine, Baby’. “Some day soon / I’m going to find all the things I’ve been yearning for”. From the glorious grey-skied ‘One Kiss Don’t Make a Summer’ with its “pride that stops the aching inside showing through”, and the “carrion crows” who “argue envy is a virtue” in the twisting, almost Lynch-esque 50s epic ‘Struck Dumb’, to the “burned out head on a broken matchstick” of ‘My Darling, Anything’, you find yourself asking: ‘is it a sad song or a happy song?’. These are love songs, it’s true – but they speak as much of insecurity as of euphoria, of a heady vertigo that is resigned to an eventual fall. ‘Baby I’m Broke’ is a mascara-streaked classic that slowly burns to a bitter incandescence. ‘It’s Yours’ will be the soundtrack to a thousand tired heads on a thousand taxicab windows. The album’s centerpiece is ‘The Great Unwanted’. Like some wayward lovechild of Dusty Springfield and THE ARCADE FIRE, it builds from a nonchalant string movement to a tremendous, melodramatic crescendo and a promise that “we will not be ignored”.

LUCKY SOUL are fronted by the beautiful Ali Howard whose voice, with its interplay of fragility and power, brings to mind Sandie Shaw, MAZZY STAR’s Hope Sandoval and THE RONETTES’ Veronica Bennett. But it is guitarist and songwriter Andrew Laidlaw’s persistent faith in his art – and his ear for a direct, irresistible melody – that is winning them a growing army of admirers (THE RAVEONETTES’ Sune Rose Wagner amongst them). In 2002, Andrew was based in Glasgow, working nights as a supervisor in a sound engineering college. When no-one else was around he’d use the space to develop what would become central to the timeless and starry-eyed LUCKY SOUL sound, staying up for days on end writing songs, perfecting them – or rejecting them. He started working with drummer Nathaniel Perkins, got a new job (dishing out those 99 Flakes at a family-run ice cream shop) and began what was to be a 2-year period of incubation, performing and rehearsing his compositions with a prototype of today’s band.

“It’s soul music by small town dreamers who don’t pretend to come from the Deep South,” he says. “Beautiful and self-effacing, bittersweet. Like romance, it seems superficial but runs deep. It doesn’t try to be clever: your guts aren’t clever.”

It was towards the end of 2004 that LUCKY SOUL began to come together in its final form. With Nathaniel and Andrew now ensconced in the capital, young guitarist Ivor Sims was recruited after Andrew witnessed him cutting deftly through the middle-aged “hell” at a blues jam at the Spice of Life pub in Soho. Then, in a dramatic twist worthy of LUCKY SOUL: the Unofficial Biography, the original singer and bassist fell in love, had a child together and ran away. After four months of searching far and wide without success, a replacement bassist was found in the form of serial Brighton mod turned nurse Toby Fogell. Meanwhile Ali Howard, who has since been described by the Guardian as “evocative of arch divas from all points Dusty Springfield to Nina Persson” was discovered in the pop psychology department of a well-known bookshop and made a perfect fit as the frontwoman shortly afterwards, with keyboardist Malcolm Young being brought on board in 2006, firstly just for the live shows, then as a full member of the band when they realised that was exactly what he’d become.

So that’s LUCKY SOUL. They’re the soundtrack to a pointless crush, or what comforts you as you wave goodbye through the train window on the 14.36 from Stockport to Euston. They’re the thing that gives you the guts to go and ask someone you’ve never seen before for a phone number, then shrug and get on with life if coldly rebuffed. In the words of cult music site Audiojunkies “I love you, LUCKY SOUL!” Or perhaps Paul Connolly expressed things best in his recent (five star) live review: “go make LUCKY SOUL stars”.
