about

Formed in the deep mid-winter of 94, PHANTOM DOG had a very clear idea of what they were aiming for right from the start. Emily and Bruce from Ireland and Scotland, respectively, along with Pepe and Adolfo, got together to create a unique Anglo/Spanish sound. Like-minded individuals but with influences as disparate as The Velvets, The Who, Beefheart or The Stooges, to the more contemporary Pixies, Mazzy Star, Throwing Muses. Within three weeks they made their live debut, two weeks later, they emerged from the studio with a 4-track demo. The Phantom Dog blue-print was in place. A furious, at times hypnotic rhythm section, curbed by Emily’s bitter-sweet, thought provoking melodies.

Not only did the demo help them get gigs, it was also the basis to being offered a contract with Elefant Records. In July, the group were finalists in the annual demo competition held by the influencial Madrid venue Maravillas. They celebrated their six-month anniversary by headlining at the Falset Indie Festival in Tarragona.

October proved to be a hectic month. The band were No 1 on Radio 3’s “Discogrande” demo chart and they were back in the studio, recording sessions for the debut single. They also lost Adolfo because of other committments, along the way. It took them until December to find the right person, Paco, who had five days to rehearse before the new line-up debuted with a blistering set at an Aids Charity show in the Spanish capital.

February was cause for a triple celebration. Phantom dog was one year-old, their first single was released and they supported the cranberries in Madrid.

Throughout Spring, the band continued to play live, including a tour of Galicia, at Easter. By early Summer they re-located to Castellon, to record the album, at Waves Studio with vanguard producer Juanma Mas, architect behind some of the best records released over the past two years.

The band have a busy schedule ahead of them. A single in September, closely followed by their eagerly-awaited LP and then a tour, to take them up to Christmas. As for 96? We think you’ll be hearing a lot about Phantom dog.
