Jim Rao has a creative, poetic, melodic flow which seems to be inexhaustible, judging for his unflagging, frantic activity during these last times: since Elefant Records released his full-length debut CD “More Mellow Hits” two years ago, his project ORANGE CAKE MIX is invading the international scene with delicious pop delicatessen expanding like waves in space.
“Honeybee” is a song taken from his CD “Blue Island Sound”, which recalls the spirit of ORANGE JUICE or the first solo albums of Edwyn Collins, whilst keeps all the characteristics which define the style, innocent and vaporous, of ORANGE CAKE MIX: heavenly vocals, echoes, tasteful instrumentation and an exquisite use of the beatbox.
In the second song he unloads all his poetic charge (“...when the sky was falling down on you I tried to hold it up, would you do the same thing for me...”), to finish waving goodbye to the world with abandon (“...let it all fall down...”), in a way which can only be called as moving.
And “Believe In Me” is an austere, shivering ending for another great record: a most beautiful exercise a cappella (thatis, without any instruments), with two dreamy vocal tracks interlacing, as in the best moments of Simon And Garfunkel.
