David Rodríguez Ponce was the leader of the band from Barcelona BACH IS DEAD, one of the pioneer, legendary bands of the Spanish independence. In spite of having been on the famous “Noise Pop 92 Tour” along with EL REGALO DE SILVIA, USURA and PENELOPE TRIP, and having released various singles and an LP (“Sonotone”, on Marylin), they didn’t get the attention they deserved. Probably, few people were ready then for a sound equally recalling WIRE, JOY DIVISION and SONIC YOUTH.
In his new project as BEEF he released an album in 1994, “Beef Songs”, a good collection of electric rhythms and technology, featuring such classics as “Noise pop guitars” or “Comiendo berenjenas”, and an excellent cover version of “Heartbeat” by WIRE. The record was chosen among the best of that year both in Rock de Lux and other mags like Spiral, but a bad promotion work kept it as a secret for the alternative public.
Also in 1994 they started their relationship with their new label Acuarela with a disturbing single (“Beef Sings”) bravely combining sonic rock and experimentation, guitars and ambient, a sort of hybrid between PAVEMENT and DISCO INFERNO. It was chosen third best single of the year in Rock de Lux and best EP of the month in Canadian fanzine “Space Age Bachelor”.
Finally, David and his new band -Juanjo, Joanra, Blas, Jesús- flew to New Jersey (USA) to have Kramer (ex-member of BUTTHOLE SURFERS and BONGWATER and producer of GALAXIE 500, URGE OVERKILL, PALACE BROTHERS, Daniel Johnston, HALF JAPANESE, etc...) producing their second album. Besides, Kramer himself was so enthusiastic about it that he even sang in a few songs (“Toto Loto” y “Mr. Set”).
On the 13th songs from “Beef Tongues”, the band shows that they know how to perfectly mix their krautrock influences (CAN, FAUST) with brilliant, catchy melodies à la NEW ORDER or STEREOLAB. A guitar whirlwind in one of the undoubted best albums of 1995.
Now, after having been sold out for some time, Elefant Records brings back both the single and debut CD on Acuarela on a same record, very limited and collectable, destined both to their fiercest fans and to the newly arrived to the exciting universe of this genius band. A new cover, splendid as always, is the best introduction for a record which is reissued with the honour of what it surely is: a classic of our time.
